The German atrocities during World War II included the systematic torture and murder of millions of Jews, Soviets, Gypsies and many other national and ethnic populations. Those who didn't die in the concentration camps were starved, forced into labor and used for medical experiments among other horrors. These victims were stripped of their humanity in the course of losing their families, homes, possessions, freedom and health. In the course of their abuse and starvation, they were also stripped of their gender. As starvation occurs, men and women tend to lose the features which tend to distinguish them physically as either male or female. Distinctive male and female fatty and muscle tissue disappears and the more androgynous human skeleton becomes more discernible. As the human body nears death by starvation, it shuts down functions which are not essential to bare survival. Among the first of these to be lost is the ability to procreate.
